The owners of NZ Trucking magazine, advertising manager Matt Smith, field editor John Murphy, and editor Dave McCoid.
Trucks have been the dominating passion in Dave’s life since day dot, and the road transport industry has dominated his working life. He started as a junior rating clerk at Thames Freightlines Ltd in 1984, and since then has pretty much covered the field, having driven, spent time in operations, project management, and senior management.
After a cumulative period of some 27 years in the industry, Dave took time out to pursue other interests, funding this by – you guessed it – driving trucks. Having contributed to New Zealand Trucking magazine as a freelancer on and off for many years, and latterly editing the magazine, Dave saw the opportunity to be a part-owner as the chance of a lifetime.
“For me it’s always about the machines and the people who drive and operate them; I simply love trucks. Nothing gives me more enjoyment than jumping into the cab and taking a load somewhere for someone. It’s just something you’re born with.
“Having the chance to part-own the magazine that was the first to give us all the ability to communicate our trucking identity to the rest of the world is a privilege beyond words, and all three of us are extremely humbled to be afforded that opportunity.
“But it’s not just about us. We go forward with an amazing team of passionate people. Their enthusiasm and belief in this publication is just so inspiring.”
Murphy Working at New Zealand Trucking is one of those jobs you dream about as a kid. John still can’t believe the opportunities he has – getting around the country, meeting people in all positions throughout the transport industry and getting up close with the trucks, businesses and roads that make the industry what it is.
The magazine is an industry icon and John believes it is really owned by the readers, advertisers and contributors, saying, “ You are the ones who decide what should be printed and really have the power; remember that – as an owner I’m always keen to hear your thoughts.” A mechanic by trade, John worked as a compliance officer for LTSA (now NZTA) and trainer for VTNZ before becoming the editor in 2008. He intends to continue his work through J2 Transport Strategy, helping operators achieve better compliance levels and become more efficient through tools like the EECA Fuel Management Programme.
Matt is the sales manager. He has held a number of sales and publication management roles in both magazines (including a previous stint at New Zealand Trucking magazine) and newspapers and he launched a DIY and trade magazine for Mitre10 11 years ago. Two years ago he sold that business and rejoined the team at Trucking.
Matt will oversee the advertising and commercial side of the magazine and is excited about being part of the ownership of such a respected magazine.
“It is our responsibility to ensure we maintain and build the standards of New Zealand’s most iconic transport magazine.
We aim to deliver the best in industry information in the traditional print format, and build on what is already proven successful in digital formats.”
